Nappy ABC contains answers to some of the most frequently asked questions, that come to mind of parents, who consider the use of non disposable nappies on their children, and we prove, that the Milovia takes you up for the most wonderful ecological adventure you can treat yourself, your children and the Environment. Let the Adventure begin!
Why use the Milovia non-disposables?
Babies seem to spend in their nappies 24 hours per day throughout the first two years of their lives. It is a pretty long and unquestionnalbly very important time of their development, when we, as Parents, manage to change their nappy nearly 5000 times!
It is worth digging into the subject and finding out what it is, that we serve our children. We already know a lot about the muslin squares and the disposable nappies. We pretty much know their advantages and disadvantanges. It is thanks to that knowledge, that we decide to go back to the cloth nappies in their new, much more practical and comfortable form.
The non-disposable Milovia nappies are cloth nappies. The well-thought cut, practical sizing options, make them a nappy, that will serve throughout the entire nappy change period, from a tiny newborn to a potty training stage.
The Milovia offer lots of advantages, among many stand out:
– free of any chemical superabsorbants and fragrances.
– free of gel granules, which are known to unable air circullation, which eventually leads to a temperature rise in the nappy.
– they complete the healthy child care. We care for healthy food, car seats, paccifiers, shoes and all else. Let’s pay attention to the nappy we choose!
– children in cloth nappies tend to understand the cause and result of their physiollogical processes, which brings them into the earlier potty training stage.
– clot nappies are part of children’s wardrobe and they do make a great difference there.
– you free yourself from the constant need of buying new nappies, which still in spite deducting the cost of washing, brings great economical results and some significant savings. The number of 5000 nappies adds up to a considerable sum of money. Let’s just count 5000 times …$/each is the exact amount we would be throwing out of the bin and letting it sink and stink there for another 300 to 500 years. Not a very admirable present we leave for the future next few generations, including our children’s.
How do we use Milovia nappies?
You have the choice of one nappy for the entire period of diaperring – ONE SIZE (3,5-16 kg / 8-35 lbs).
The Milovia nappies are brought to perfection in their shape and what is more, the generous number snaps make it a perfectly fitting nappy for both, tiny and a plump bum.
Made of two kinds of fabrics. The outer layer is the innovative, breathable, vapour-permeable and waterproof fabric. The inner fabric is either microfleece, or Coolmax – highest quality fabrics. Microfleece provides the maximum of dryness, dries quickly and is resistant to stains, while Coolmax gently “informs” the child about wetting, providing maximum air circullation. Those two layers create a pocket, where the soft, most absorbant microfibre insert is put. Those fabrics are easy to keep clean, hard to stain and quick to dry.
Nappy needs to be put on a baby and the snaps need to be adjusted. When the nappy needs a change, the insert needs to be taken out of the packet and both separated, the insert and the pocket nappy need to be storred in a closed, dry place, such as the plastic storrage bin with a lid. The solids are to be emptied earlier into the toilet with a stream of water. As soon as there are enough nappies to make up one full set of laundries, they need to be rinsed and washed according to the instructions on the label. Most of work is done by the washing machine, all that is left to us, is hanging the nappies to dry. In few hours the nappies are ready to be used again. All work takes fifteen minutes. It only means, that this is all it takes for the faeces to end where they belong, for tons of disposable nappies not to end on the waste dump and for your child to have one fabulous nappy.
How do we use nappy covers?
The Milovia nappy covers are made of exactly the same steam-permeable PUL fabric as the Milovia pocket nappies. The only difference is, that instead of the inside layer, one that would create the pocket, there are two pleats made of PUL, which are covered from the inner side with some microfleece. This allows the perfect fit of all kinds of inserts, beginning with the Milovia microfibre inserts covered on one side with microfleece (touching the bum side), through any muslin squares, ending with simple flannel. Any other than the Milovia insert, can be covered with the Milovia microfleece Stay Dry Insert, providing the feeling of dryness and making getting rid of feaces easier for us.
The nappy covers work well during long naps, long breaks between changes. Their construction allows them to stay dry for very long time. The size and number of inserts can be easily adjusted during wear, providing the nappy cover not having been messed up.
What is the difference between Milovia’s nappy and nappy cover?
How do we put on the Milovia nappy? It is very simple!
How do we put on the Milovia nappy? It is very simple!
First the size of the nappy (cover or pocket) needs to be adjusted with its snaps up front. Basically, after the first wear, we should already know which size fits best our Baby. Three sizes are available: 1) the smallest – top are snapped with the bottom snaps up in front oif the nappy; 2) medium – tops are snapped with the middle ones and 3) the biggest – snaps undone.
After having adjusted the size, we place the clean insert inside of the nappy. It is to be placed inside, so it would not stick out of the nappy in front.
Those adjustments we can get done earlier, as to have ready-to-use nappies. Set of well prepared to use nappies is easy to take for a walk or on a trip.
Ready to use non-disposable nappy is put on a baby just as the disposable nappy, except snaps are used intead of the velcro. Snaps are generously spread on the nappy, which in combination with the wide ellastic band at the back part, makes it an easily fit nappy. Snapps are not difficult to work with and they hold very well. Nappy is at work! All that is left to us, is to enjoy the view of our well dressed little munchkin. From time to time, nappy needs to be checked for its fullness, so to be changed in time.
The Milovia nappy covers are put on in a similar way, except for the necessity of placing the absorbant insert between the two pleats.
How many nappies will we need?
We need to remember, that the Milovia pocket nappies, inserts and nappy covers are available to buy separately. In order to check how we feel in the role of eco-parents, we do not need to buy the entire stock of nappies.
Our experience seems to show, that once someone tries the non disposable nappies, they are amazed at their convenience of use and the stash of most suitable nappies begins to grow. Often times Parents use alternatively both, the pockets and the nappy covers. Each of those products has its fans and its best to try for yourself and make your own decision.
Children at the age of 0-6 months require most attention and this is also the time of most frequent changes. Should the child weigh more than seven pounds, the ONE SIZE pocket nappies can be used right from the start. It is very convenient to have around 5-6 pocket nappies and 3-4 ONE SIZE nappy covers. The number of inserts should be higher than the nappies, as it takes longer for those to dry. Such a stash of nappies will serve us throughout the entire time of nappy use and the nappy covers will serve well during the period of potty training, protecting from wetting the furniture or baby’s feet.
How often do we need to change the Milovia nappy?
Nappy needs to be changed as often as it is necessary. In case of a newborn, it will mean a change of a nappy as often as every 1-2 hours, as the child grow, the nappy will need less frequent changes, approximately every 2-3 hours and once we learn how to use a potty, nappies can be storred away for the potential newcoming sibbling:) For children, who sleep through the night, we highly recommend the use of nappy covers in combination with the Milovia stay dry inserts. This set will provide peaceful sleep and will protect clothes from soaking through.
How do we wash the Milovia pockets and nappy covers?
The Milovia products – nappies, covers and inserts should be washed in known detergents designed for washing childrens’ clothes, with rinsing at the beginning, on a programme 1,5-2h, in a 40-60 degrees temperature, with spinning under 800 spm. Our products are also to be dry naturally – in a hanging position. We wash the new nappies before the first use. Undoing the nappies/covers do not pull the snaps at cant, using a force, just hold the fabric possibly close to the snaps. As soon as we collect the right amount of nappies, covers and inserts we throw them into the washing machine (pulling out the inserts from the nappies) and add maximum of half of the recommended amount of washing powder designed for washing children clothes (mind the concertates!). Larger amount of washing detergents may cause its residue after rinse and cause the nappies to smell. Do not add the washing powder directly to the drum, do not add rinse aids, bleaching detergents, nor water softenning aids, especially the soaps. We do not use washing detergents which contains more than 5% of soap, detergents not designed for washing children’ clothes, washing balls and nuts, etc, 100 % plant derived detergents (often concentrated), essential oils, soapflakes, citrioc acid, vinegar, „homemade” detergents, do not wash without detergent (f.e. with only desinfectant or backing soda). Avoid washing in cold water (the washing machine is perceptibly warm in 20th minute of washing), washinf in temperature over 60 degrees, extremly long or short wsashing cycle (the best 2h), washing with a lot of dusty things. Avoid different elements adding to the drum: container for detergents, buckles, toys, tissues, crayons, books, etc. Do not spin over 800 spinning per minute (check the programme), do not squeeze in hands or put in a hot water!
Set on rinse, then wash at the temperature of 60 C degrees, or at 40 C degrees, though in that case, some anti bacterial powder needs to be added, such as the Nappy Fresh (it works even at low temperatures). It is important not to overload the washing machine. Every washing machine has different capacity, try to full it only with 3/4 laundry. We take out the nappies, hang them to dry. Nappy covers and pockets are not to be dried (or stored) directly on hot surfaces, such as radiators, in the full sun, or on the freeze. Once dry, they are ready to use. The amount of water we use for a single nappy laundry wash is smaller than amount of water one uses daily in the toilet. The washing can be done within 1-3 days, depending on the amount of nappies owned, the amount of washing powder is smaller than in the regular laundry washes and the effectivness of modern washing machines, does not require any special preperations.
Is there anything, to make using the non disposable nappies easier?
As we use the non disposable nappies, we can provide ourselves with additional things, such as:
– the Milovia PUL nappy storage bags – useful during walks and trips,
– the antibacterial additive to washing at low temperatures,
– additional inserts, as those tend to dry longer than the nappy covers and pocket nappies,
– storage bin or any container with a lid, for easy storage.
